What Does This Mean?:
The IRS will stop issuing paper refund checks for most taxpayers starting September 30, 2025, as part of a government-wide modernization drive. After this date, nearly all tax refunds will be distributed electronically, such as direct deposit, prepaid debit card, or digital wallet.
What Changes for The Taxpayer?:
Tax refunds will be issued via electronic payment methods by default. If a taxpayer does not provide bank information, the IRS will hold the refund and request necessary details. If bank information is not provided within six weeks, the IRS may release the refund with additional guidance expected for such cases.
How Should I Pay the IRS if I Owe Money?:
Taxpayers may still send payments to the IRS by check during the transition period, but the goal is to move all federal tax payments to electronic forms.
